Today, David Fu was our tour guide as we explored Beijing. David is a Christian who must meet in an underground home church. At this time, his pastor is in jail. It takes courage to be a Christian here. Our first stop was the Forbidden City, the walled city that housed the Emporer and his many wives and concubines. The common people were forbidden access to this huge compound which was built in the 1400's. Here's a picture of us standing at the entrance gate with Chairman Mao Tse Tung looking over our shoulder. We walked through Tiananmen Square, the largest public square in any city in the world. We took a bicycle rickshaw tour of the Hutong district which is in the old traditional part of Beijing. A real cultural/historical experience. It makes you feel kind of small to be walking around in a city of 17 million people. We ate lunch in the home of a Chinese family in the Hutong district. Real Chinese food! Above is a picture of Bradley holding a spoon after he finally gave up on the chopsticks. In the afternoon we toured a silk factory to see how silk from a worm's cocoon becomes colorful Chinese outfits. Kathy helped the local economy by bringing several of them home. We spent today with two other American couples who are also adopting through Living Hope.
